Florida, Bahamas, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, north to Massachusetts, Bermuda and south to Brazil.

Ecology

Is being found on coral- and rocky reefs in depths from 15 to 80 feet. It feeds on a variety of small bottom invertebrates. These are for example molluscs, crustaceans, worms, sessile tunicates and sponges. Smooth Trunkfishes either live solitary or in small groups and can release toxins, which kill other fish, when it feels excited.

Description

The body is dark with white spots and has a pectoral fin. The size is six to 10 inches. Juveniles have a dark body with honeycomb markings and are about the size of a pea.
